Procedure Reference: Install windows XP professional

To install Windows XP professional as the only operating system on the computer:

This procedure assumes that you do not currently have an operating system on the computer

1.verify that the computer’s hardware meet the requirement for Windows XP.

2.start the installation.

If the computer does not have a bootable CD-ROM drive, boot the computer from the first Setup disk. Use the following step to create and use the Setup disks if you don’t have them:

a.verify that you have three blank floppy disks.

b.At a working computer, insert the windows XP CD-ROM.

c.If you’re using Windows 9x or MS-DOS, run\bootdisk\makeboot.exe from the windows XP CO-ROM to create the setup disks.

d.If you’re using windows 2000,windowo XP, or windows NT, run\bootdisk\makebt32.exe from the windows XP CD-ROM to create the Setup disks.

e.Insert each disk when prompted

f.Label the disk.

g.Insert the first Windows Setup disk and start the computer. When prompted, insert each additional disk as required.

If the computer has a bootable CD-ROM drive, insert the windows XP CD- ROM and start the computer . If prompted, press a key to boot from CD.

If the installation files are on a network share, complete the following step:

a.Connect the computer to the network.

b.Access the network share containing the installation files.

c.Double-click the appropriate Setup program file

3.On the welcome to setup page, press enter to install windows XP.

4.Press F8 to agree to the Microsoft windows 2000 professional license.

5.Partition and format the computer’s hard disk.

a.If the computer has any existing partitions you no longer need, highlight the partition and press D to delete each partition. Press L to confirm that you want to delete the partition.

b.To create a partition, highlight Unpartitioned Space and press C. In the text box, type the size for the partition and press Enter.

c.Highlight the partition in which you want to install Windows XP and press Enter.

d.Select from the following choices to format the new partition:

Format The Partition Using The NTFS File System (quick)
Format The Partition Using The FAT File System (quick)
Format The Partition Using The NTFS File System
Format The Partition Using The FAT File System
e.Press Enter.

When the format is complete, Setup checks the partition and then copies some of the Windows XP file to the hard disk.

6.Press enter to restart the computer. Do not boot from the CD-ROM.

Setup now detects and installs the devices in the computer.

7.When the hardware detection is complete, on the Regional Settings page, configure the locale and keyboard layout if necessary.
8.Click Next.

9.On the personalize your Software page, complete the following:

In the name text box, type the user of thecomputer’s name.
In the organization text box. Type the company name.
Click Next.

10.Enter the product Key and click Next.

11.On the computer Name And Administrator

Password page, complete the following:
In the computer Name text box, type a name for the computer .
In the Administrator password text box, type the password you want to assign to the Administrator’s user account.

In the confirm password text box, re-type the password
Click Next.

12.If Setup detected a modem in the computer, on the Modem Dialing
Information page, compete the following:
Form the what country Are you In now drop-down list, select the appropriate
country or region.
In the what Area Code Are you In Now text box, type the area code.
In the If you dial A number to get an outside line text box, type a value if
applicable.
Select either Tone Dialing or Pulse dialing.

Click Next.

13.On the date And Time Settings page, configure the date, time, time zone, and
whether your location adjusts for daylight Savings Time. Click next.

14.On the networking Setting page, select one of the following:
If you want to install the network components with TCP\IP as the only protocol
and you want the IP address to be assigned dynamically, select Typical Settings.
If you want to configure TCP\IP manually, or you want to install addition
protocols, select Custom Settings.

15.Click Next.

16.If you select Custom Setting, use the Networking Components page to customize the network connection.
Click Install to add additional network components such as protocols.
Highlight Internet Protocol and click Properties to manually configure the IP addressing information.

Click Next when you’re finished.

17.On the workgroup Or Computer Domain, complete the following steps:
a.If you want the computer to be a member of a workgroup, select No. This Computer Is Not On A Network. Or Is On Network without A Domain. In the Make This Computer A
Member Or The Following Workgroup text box, type the name of the workgroup.

b.If you want the computer to be a member of a Domain, select yes, Make This Computer A member of The Following domain, In the text box, type the NetBIOS name of the domain.

c.Click Next.

d.If you’re joining the computer to a domain, in the join computer to domain dialog box, type the user name and password of a user with administrative right for the domain. Click OK

Setup now completes copying the Windows XP files to the disk. This process
may take 25 to 30 minutes. The computer automatically restarts when the copy
process completes.

18.In the welcome To Microsoft Windows page , click next.

19.Select one of the following options to configure how the computer connects to
the Internet:
Yes This Computer Will connect Through A Local Area Network Or Home
network
No, This computer will connect directly To The internet.

20.Click Next.

21.On the Ready To register with Microsoft page , select whether you want to
register the computer with Microsoft at this time. If you select yes, click Next and complete the steps to register the computer.

22.Click Next.

23.If you configured the computer as a member of a workgroup and not a domain, on
the who will use This Computer page, type the names of the users who will use the computer and click Next. Windows XP will automatically create user account for these users.

24.Click Finish.
